 Water Safety for Dogs

“Splish Splash—But Stay Safe!”

Whether it's a lake, river, or the ocean, water play can be an amazing way for dogs to cool off and burn energy—but it’s not without risk. Before you let your pup dive in, here are some must-know tips to keep them safe and healthy around water:

1. Beware of Algae Blooms

  • Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be deadly to dogs and often shows up in still or warm freshwater during summer.
  • Avoid letting your dog drink from or swim in water that looks discolored, smells bad, or has a green film on top.
  • If you suspect exposure, rinse your dog off immediately and call your vet—don’t wait.

2. Watch for Saltwater Hazards

  • Drinking too much ocean water can cause salt poisoning, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures.
  • Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl to offer often—hydrated dogs are less tempted to gulp salty water.
  • Rinse off after ocean swims to remove salt and sand that can irritate skin or cause itching.

3. Check Water Conditions

  • Strong currents, tides, and waves can be dangerous—even for strong swimmers.
  • Use a dog life vest for added safety, especially in open water or on boats.
  • Know your dog’s limits and avoid pushing them to swim if they’re anxious or unsure.

4. Don’t Forget the Ears!

  • Moisture trapped in ears can lead to infections, especially in floppy-eared breeds.
  • Dry your dog’s ears gently after swimming, and consider a cleaning solution approved by your vet.

5. Post-Swim Clean-Up is Key

  • Always rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine, bacteria, or salt.
  • Check paws for cuts from shells, rocks, or debris—and inspect between the toes!

Quick Tip: Always supervise water play, even in backyard pools. And if your dog’s new to swimming? Start in shallow, calm areas and build confidence slowly.
